There are now 93 churches built and completed in the Dedougou District. (02/01)

JUDY (WEIDMAN ‘76) BOBBETT recently married Marv Retzer, who she met through his doing consulting work for the Christian school where she works. “Through the fall it became ‘more than friends’... and over Christmas he gave me a ring. ...Suffice it to say that I feel blessed beyond words to have met such a godly, caring, tenderhearted, thoughtful, kind man. He’s an elementary school principal (taught or administered in Christian schools for about 20 years before going into a public school position), has two grown daughters....We’re praying for an opening in an elementary school down here for next year.” Judy and Marv live with her children in Greenwood, IN. Email congrats and greetings to jbobbett@earthlink.net. (03/01)

JILL (BOTTEMILLER ‘76) Shepherd’s son, Jason, was a freshman this year and is playing JV soccer as the goal keeper and having a good time at it “He does a pretty good job. He’s never had any keeper training — just stepped in cuz he actually likes it. That definitely is not my favored position.” Jeremiah is a 7th grader this year and plays soccer, too. “He’s played classic ball for the past three years. He works hard and does a good job.” Daughter, Jael, is in 1st grade. “My baby is out of the house! Yes, I am a little bit sad about that. This is the first year since I’ve had children that I haven’t had any at home for an entire school day. Haven’t quite gotten used to it yet. She plays soccer, too — and Mom coaches her. Yes, my life does tend to revolve around the game. I’m still working part time - 2 twelve hour night shifts a week, plus extra when we get busy and they’re in a pinch. That’s plenty for me. I have a hard enough time managing my house and all the schedules with that.” Email Jill at j_shepherd@hotmail.com. (09/00)

For PAM (WATKINS ‘77) & Barry Shultz the year 2000 was “full, busy, fast, full of learning and reworking the way we live day to day (since we have a baby again), and overall, a wonderful year.…We did enjoy a trip to NY for a Watkins family reunion and then a 2 week stay at the Outer Banks beaches with all the Shultz family. The girls are ever a joy in our home! Emily is one now and as she gets taller, so does her reach! …Big sister Britt can sure get her laughing heartily! We are all so thankful for this baby God has let us have! Britt is growing into quite the little lady, yet is mostly “tomboy”. She is a good equestrian …. We are busy working at home schooling the fourth grade and as with most kids, this is not Britt’s first choice of something to do.” The Shultzs are enjoying good health which they attribute to lots of exercise and eating “80-90% fresh and raw.” (12/00) Pshultz1@juno.com. (See family pix on the ICA Alumni website.)

RUTH (DANIELS ‘78) Thompson and her husband, Jim, are living in the Chicago area, and Jim is working full time at Moody Bible Institute in the Educational Technical Service Dept (Computer Dept). God has blessed us tremendously with healthy, active, and fun children.. smile...” Email the Thompsons at thompjr@juno.com. (02/01)

BECCA (WEBSTER ‘78) Paonessa has been working as a RN at Missionary Health Institute in Toronto, and helping as a counselor for MK re-entry retreats. “It has helped me piece together some important parts of my life and one of the things I’m trying to do is keep contact....I have been married for 17 years to a landscape artist, who is the Canadian artist for Hallmark Cards as well. We have three children: Ellen (13); Alessandra (11); Sev (8), plus a dog, cat, hamster, newt, goldfish. [The re-entry retreats have] been such an exciting ministry, and for the first time all the pieces of my life have come together. I can really relate to the issues these kids face, and share how the Lord has had to be my inheritance and roots. It is really difficult for me to raise children in a culture I never had to face at their age. ICA was such a good experience for me and it was so sheltered and spiritual. My children have to face incredible pressures in a big city. Thankfully, we have a great church, and my husband is a sensitive Christian, and so far the Lord is faithful. It seemed so much easier to trust the Lord in Africa than it does here.” Email Becca at Spaonart@aol.com. (02/01)

KATHY (GRUNER ‘78) Vineyard died October 8, 2000, at her home in Oregon.

PHIL (‘85) and Shannon MAXWELL and their sons Noah and Micah have spent the last few months in California, planning to leave for Niger on Dec. 10, but have had to postpone their departure to January 13 due to a shortfall of in support requirements. The next year the Lord brought them together in a dating relationship at ICA which culminated in their marriage in 1990. They chose their careers for the purpose of serving overseas, he as a pilot/mechanic and she as a nurse. Their 5 years of “living the American dream” in Georgia, paying off their school debts, and experiencing a lot of training , molding and healing have now come to an abrupt close. Following a revival that began last year in their church and home, they felt an urgency to pray, even to fast. You know the saying: P.U.S.H. (“Pray Until Something Happens”). Well, something has happened! They are aggressively pursuing employment with Air Serv International and plan to be head quartered in Conakry, Guinea flying relief for the West African refugees. NOUGHTIES

DANIEL CLOUSER (‘00) is attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania, which has no relation to the State of Indiana whatsoever, as he will tell you. He is spending a lot of time at cultural events like operas and art museums. He is not dating, of course.

NATHAN KUNKLE (‘00) still has a relationship going with Stacie Sessoms, who is currently a Junior at ICA. He lives in Beaverdam, Michigan. He is turning into a hick, in his own words, “brainwashed.”

TYLER SYLVESTER (‘00), the last we heard, is working at a gas station. That was in November, so he is probably not doing that anymore, knowing Tyler.

JEFF REQUADT (‘00) is studying at Southwestern College along with AIMEE (VAUGHAN ‘98) YOUNG. He reports, “There are about 160 students here. It is dinky. Really dinky. It’s a lot like ICA, only probably better. At least, curfew is 11:00 instead of 8:30.” Write to jeffreyrequadt@hotmail.com.

FORMER STAFF

Val (MCKENZIE) Steppan is a stay at home mom now with the two kids, living in Portage la Prairie, MB. Her husband Warren works at an oat processing plant, and they enjoy attending and serving in their local church. Val says it would be great to hear from friends. Write to her at wsteppan@escape.ca.

MARK and DEE KRUEGER now work in Guinea and are in the process of learning Pular. “We are working among the Fulbe doing church planting in a town called Timbi Madina in the Fouta Jalon. Our twins will be graduating from ICA this coming summer.”

Bob & Lorraine Gruner (math teacher; RN) grieve the loss of their second daughter, Kathy Vineyard (‘78), on October 8, 2000. Their older daughter, Peggy (‘74) died several years ago. The Gruners have a son, Mark, who did not attend ICA. You can reach the Gruners at PO Box 68, Dover, ID 83825 or email them at rtgrunner@micron.net. (02/01)

Dale Love (maintenance ‘73-’74) lives in Sacramento, CA, and is retired from full-time construction work. Dale built some of the buildings at ICA and elsewhere in RCI. He and his wife, Barbara (5-6th grade teacher), who died of breast cancer in 1993, started sponsoring Asian refugees in California in the 80’s, and Dale started a Mienh church. He is now licensed by the State of California as a minister to perform weddings, etc. [Dale is a Bible graduate from Biola University but has always been in construction.] According to son, Larry (‘74), the Mienh church has since grown larger than the main (American) church with which they are associated and has become indigenous — full of Christian leaders and servants of God. Dale now gives most his time to helping refugees (of all types) through the bureaucracy of the legal system and also helps people with electrical, plumbing, housing additions, etc. He’s still involved with the Mienh church and community and also works at a hospice helping families deal with death and dying. Daughter, Linda (‘73) fills us in on the romantic details, reporting that Dale married a Mienh lady who just got her citizenship last year and changed her name to Phan (“Fawn”, formerly “Muong”). Fawn helps Dale immensely in his ministry and has a daughter who will soon be getting married and a son who just had a baby girl, so Dale is now a grampa! email Dale at loveadalelove@aol.com. A Letter from ICA
February 26, 2001
“After supper the younger girls pulled mattresses into Brian & Cathy’s living room to watch videos and spend the night. Once the older girls came in, we enjoyed watching some videos, as well as stopping periodically to eat popcorn, mildshakes, breadsticks, etc. It was just all so totally relaxing! Being up so late that night, everyone really slept in late the next morning. It felt wonderful! The dining hall put on a great brunch for everyone at 10:30, and then at 11:30 anyone who wanted could go to the pool for the afternoon (an All-School Swim — ie. available to anyone). All of our girls chose to do that and had a great time. That day (Sat.) we had arranged for an African chef, who works for alot of people on campus, to come and prepare a fancy meal for us that evening. He did all the shopping and worked all day preparing a scrumpious meal of steak smoothered in a savory mushroom sauce, french fries, green beans (with all the onions & garlic, etc. that make them SO good!), fancy salad, dinner rolls, and then for desert he made cream puffs with chocolate mousse filling! We set the table with china and goblets and candles, had a special bubbly, non-acohol beverage to use in our goblets, turned out the lights and put on dinner music and had a wonderful meal! We all had had fun getting dressed up fancy for it, as well — something the boys just probably would not have appreciated or enjoyed as much as we females did! Abit later things began ‘deteorating’ abit as we changed back into cooler, more comfortable clothes and the chocolate got smeared in places off the mark of the mouths! It began with Ruth & Maria deciding to have a cream puff eating contest — without using their hands! After that, anything went! But, hey, it was our night, and we could enjoy it however we wanted! After we got cleaned up from that, Kara, Chantelle, Charity, Cody, Cathy & I played Pictionary, while Larissa, Maria & Ruth entertained us with their crazy antics! We wished that the video camera had not gone with the boys! Later we again enjoyed some videos, and the night ended with the girls piling into Cathy’s airconditioned bedroom for the night. It had been such a hot, muggy day, and the night didn’t promise to be much better. So they all got another great night’s sleep — it didn’t start until late, but then they slept until almost 10am, since there was no Sunday School with it being Long Weekend. We had a good church service, and the dining hall outdid itself with a wonderful meal of chicken/ham cordon bleu and cheesy mashed potatoes. We came home stuffed, but happy! Noonrest was do-what-you-want time, keeping in the relaxful mode. Again it was a very hot, muggy day, so Cathy offered that we could watch our Sunday afternoon video in her bedroom. Air conditioning is so nice! Unfortunately, that is the only room in the dorm that has it! So it was very nice of Aunt Cathy to share with us! By the way, Brandon was back from his weekend by that time — by lunch time, actually. The girls were teasing him about being the thorn among roses and giving him a bad time about crashing their all-girl time! He seemed to handle it — perhaps I should even say enjoy it?! ~ just fine! “The rest of the kids began returning around supper time. Again, because of it being Long Weekend, there was no evening service. The boys were busy unpacking the vehicle and getting equipment, etc. put away, and some of the older girls were enjoying a water fight in the back yard ~~ which the boys, of course, ended up joining in once they were done with helping Uncle Brian. The rest of us enjoyed some Maze, and later some hot cocoa and cinnamon toast before heading to bed. “It was a wonderful, wonderful weekend. Just what we were all needing to make it the rest of the way through this trimester. I think we had been feeling pretty drained, but now are refreshed and ready to go on. Thank You, Lord!” Lovingly, Aileen for Berea
