YKYAMKW
(YOU KNOW YOU'RE AN MK WHEN)... Here are some samples from the book: You see bread made with caraway seeds and think the flour had weevils. (Don vandenBerg) A static sound on the phone makes you proclaim, "That's what I said, OVER!" (Reenie Posey) You can't answer the question, "Where are you from?" You think that barrels make good end tables, and think that barrels make good night stands. 011 is a familiar area code. You speak two languages, but can't spell either. You flew before you could walk. The U.S. is a foreign country. You embarrass yourself by asking what swear words mean. You have a passport, but no driver's license. You watch National Geographic specials and recognize someone. You have a time zone map next to your telephone. You consider a city 500 miles away to be "very close." Your life story uses the phrase "Then we went to..." five times. You prefer a Land Rover to a Lexus. You can cut grass with a machete, but can't start a lawnmower. You think in grams, meters, and liters. You speak with authority on the quality of airline travel. You read the international section before the comics. You live at school, work in the tropics, and go home for vacation. You grew up with a maid. You do your devotions in another language. (c)1996 Andrew and Deborah Kerr. Used by permission.
REUNIONS On January 24, we had a mini-ICA reunion in St. Charles, Illinois. Miss Jan Daugherty and Uncle Russ and Ruth Ragsdale were in town for the gathering. Approximately 30 ICAers attended, including several staff persons and grads from 1974 to 1998. It was a great time of fellowship and refreshment. You have probably figured out by now that there will NOT be an all-ICA reunion in 1999. JewelEvans wrote us to say that there wasn't enough of an interest to warrant planning a reunion. "Many who filled out the surveys said they wouldn't be able to attend, but would have LOVED to have come if they could have. But there were only about 20 responses that came back to us. As a result, we are abandoning the idea of having the Portland reunion and letting individual classes have their own as they have been doing all along." Be
sure to let the Echoes [and the web site, webmaster@ica.ed.ci] know
if you are planning a class reunion. Remember The Alumni Echoes only publishes
about 1-2x a year so you'll

In March 1999, Mimi (Parelius '71) and Joe Romanowski's home in Southfield, Michigan, was caught in a major fire - nothing was salvageable. They are now rebuilding the home. Joe has also had eye trouble and Mimi's older brother, Robert, who some alumni will remember, had congestive heart failure due to years of "silent" heart attacks resulting in the 50% dead cardiac muscle. He underwent successful triple bypass surgery and is feeling better than he has for months. On a positive note, Clara Rose Parelius (Bethany dorm parents 1962 - 1965) celebrated her 80th birthday in January, 1999. Rolf Parelius went to be with the Lord in August, 1993. Clara Rose now lives in Bradenton, FL but will be moving to live with Joe and Mimi in early November. Joe and Mimi's temporary address is: 5675 Drake Hollow Drive West, West Bloomfield, MI 48322. Once a month Dwight has been traveling to ICA to offer medical services to students and staff. Debbie has been home-schooling Dara and a friend and facilitating the family's other ministries. She also works with SS teachers' training seminars, week-end camps and music ministry. Bruce ('73) and Janna Jacobs live in Wheaton, Illinois. (7/99) Joseph Ellington, ('90) has completed a BA in French and Psychology from Furman University and an MA in French Literature from the University of South Carolina. "My initial thoughts of PhD in French turned greedy, and I decided instead to try my hand in the business world. Today, I am gainfully employed with the Sherwin-Williams Company, whose die-hard slogan "Cover the Earth" keeps me busy raveling about the country helping troubleshoot management systems. For now, I am begrudgingly content to eat a home-cooked meal on the rarest of occasions and to sleep in the same hotel for no more than a week at a stretch. My feet will forever be swollen from the incessant dipping and diving of that most notorious of beasts known as the commercial jetliner. However, despite my grievances, I must say that I am satisfied. And why shouldn't I be? In the blink of an eye, I can imagine the smell, the sound, and the friendships of a quiet corner of this sometimes very large planet. The tiniest of hamlets in a place perceived by many to be the ends of the earth. ICA." Write Joseph at mjellin@hotmail.com. Ragsdale has fully recovered from a probable stroke she suffered on
September 20 in Budapest, Hungary where she and Russ (director
and teachers 1965-92) have been working We
heard from GrammaGrif recently and she thoroughly enjoyed receiving
cards from many alumni for her 90th birthday. Winifred (Winnie) Griffith,
or "Gramma Grif", was assistant dorm mother in Bethany, piano teacher,
banquet and party planner extraordinaire from approximately 1966 to 1972.
"It was just fabulous getting cards from so many-27, I think, and after
25 years that is wonderful. The first 3 were from boys (well, they are
in their 40's now)." Gramma's birthday celebration took place in Monterey,
CA, near Carmel-by-the-Sea. The family and group of friends took seven
cabins in the Pacific Grove area. Her son and all of his children and
grandchildren were in attendance, as well as Terry Price (first grade
teacher '71-72), who came with her husband and family from Colorado Springs,
CO. Terry had been Gramma's roommate at ICA, and the two women have kept
in touch through the years. The 4-day week-end in July included a picnic,
trip to Pacific Grove Aquarium, and several special meals out, plus the
reception which was held at a local church's fireside room on Gramma's
actual birthday, July 25. There were 40 guests who enjoyed "solos, kiddies
playing their pieces on the piano, people saying nice things about me,
community-type singing. " Gramma spoke too, and she was given 90 long-stemmed
pink rose buds. A dinner followed at a restaurant right on the ocean,
ending with a birthday cake. Sunday featured a "Quaker church service"
in the largest cabin with different ones sharing thoughts, praying and
joining in group hymn singing. "We all loved it. It was such a precious
time." Gramma reports that she is in pretty good health, doesn't even
use a cane, but has arthritis in her hands and some vision problems. She
thanks God for his goodness. "I would love to go to CBI conference in
Denver -in July-but have to pray about that, and think about it too. Maybe
the mile-high city would be too high. I would need someone to go with
me. Have to use G.C.S. as I tell my children. Good common
