We're back! Alumni Association archives reveal that our last issue was circulated in August of 1992. Since that time we have gathered a lot more information about ICA's many alumni. We have decided to include in this issue as much of that information as possible. Please note the month and year in parenthesis at the end of each paragraph below this is the month and year the news was received. Ages of children are approximate as of 10/95. 1960s Jeff ('68) and Jan Swinborne live in the Twin Cities, MN. They have three children. (11/95) Joyce (Camp '69) and Dan Nelson live in Palo Cedro, California. Joyce is an R.N., working three 12-hour evening shifts at a Redding hospital. She is glad to have a schedule that lets her be a mom to her kids, Lisa (17), Lynette (16), and Timmy (11). (10/92)
1970s Glenn and Linnea (Slater '70) Boese serve in linguistic, field administration, medical and church planting ministries in Ferkessedougou, Cote D'Ivoire. Daughter Marisa graduated from ICA in the Class of '95 and is now attending Michigan State University. The Boeses have a younger daughter, Ariane, and a son, Bryn. The Boeses are on furlough in Beverly Hills, Michigan, this year, hoping to return to the field in June, at which time they will start translation in the Nyarafolo language of the Ferke area. Glenn will continue his part time ministry at the hospital, and Linn will also be homeschooling Bryn part time. Gerald and Carol (Palmer '71) are living in Bothel, Washington. They are expecting their first child in late April or early May 1996. Carol is an RN. Gerald is looking for employment. (Fall 1995) Kathy & Joe Swinborne ('71) live in a log house in Bemidji, MN, where they are school bus drivers. They have three children. (Fall 1995) Nancy and Dan "Buster" Grudda ('72) are now living and working in Yamoussoukro, C.I., where Dan teaches at the Bible School one day a week This fall, Dan will be traveling to Korhogo twice a month to help teach in the Bible School there for a few days. Dan is also serving as field chairman for CBI's Cote d'Ivoire field this year. Son David started school at ICA, but this year he is attending an MK school in Yamo with his little brother, Steven. Their little sister's name is Julianne, and she is 4 years old. Debbie and Dwight Earl Slater ('72) have taken a leave of absence from the Cote d'Ivoire medical work for the 199596 school year. They purchased a home in Southfield, Michigan, which they hope to use as a home base for when they are in the U.S. They hope to accelerate payments and rent it to other missionaries or full time Christian workers at a subsidized rate while they are overseas. DJ is now in 9th grade, Stephen is in 7th, and daughter, Dara, is 4 years old. Deleen & Mike Cousineau ('73) returned from furlough in December 1995 to Bouna, Cote d'Ivoire where they minister at the Bouna Bible Institute. Ten men graduated from the institute in June 1995. Daughter, Brooke, is at ICA this year. Their other daughter, Kristina, is at home. Gail & Don van den Berg ('73) serve with JAARs in Waxhaw, NC. Their winter 1995 prayer letter mentions the following projects for Don: and building an engine mount for the diesel engine, making a form for cargo pod production, making pitot tubes, and a supply of door hinges for the Helios. Gail is home schooling their two children, Michael (9) and Christy (7). (Winter 1995) Jan and Dave Bothwell ('74) have recently been reassigned from Irian Jaya to Wycliffe's JAARS Center in Waxhaw, North Carolina. Dave's new assignment is assistant to the Director of Aviation, which involves working on special projects and administrative coordination that address and help the operational field programs. Bruce works as a financial planner in Livonia, Michigan. The Slaters are homeschooling their three children. (10/95) Betty and John Arnold ('75) have been replacing the dorm parents in Bethesda dorm this year. They have two boys at ICA. Anne and Paul van den Berg ('75) live and work in Lesigny, France. Their three children are Nathan, Timothy, and Lucas. Carol & David Pinkston ('75) moved into a new house in Hamilton, Ohio, in the summer of 1994. The Pinkstons have two sons, Luke (3rd grade) and Morgan (kindergarten with Mom). Dave completed his 10th year at P&G's Miami Valley Labs in 1995. (12/95) Ken Slater ('75) works in logistics management for an orthopedic firm in Indiana. (10/95) Edna & John Swinborne ('75) live in Virginia where John is in the Navy. They have three children (Fall 1995) Judy (Weidman '76) and Jon Bobbett ('76) moved to Charlotte, NC in June 1995. Also living in the Charlotte area are Heidi (Zobrist '77) and Jorge Guzman and Rindi Bowman ('77). Melinda and Randy Chastagner ('76) live near Randy's brother, Ed, in Kent, Washington. They have two boys, Adam (10) and Peter (8). Randy works for Boeing and still enjoys playing soccer when he has time. Paul ('76) and Joanne Friesen have four children, Joshua (10, Naomi (7), Caleb (3), and Ruth (2). They live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Their latest plans (9/93) were for Paul to get a master's degree and to apply for a position as seminary teacher in Africa with the North American Baptist Church. Jon ('76) and Jesse Ritchey, are missionaries stationed in Guinea. (11/95) Inell and Brent Slater ('76) are in church planting and leadership training with CBI in Uganda. They are also involved in field leadership and teaching "Religion" in public schools. The Slaters have two children, Luke and Garrett. Rindi Bowman ('77) works at an African mission organization in Charlotte, NC. (1995) Martin and Debra (Clark '77) Burg live in West Lafayette, IN, and do scientific research at Purdue University. They have two sons, Brian (8) and Steven (4). Lori Gould ('77) is a legal/executive secretary to the managing partner of a Christian law firm in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She is coordinator of community outreach projects in her singles group at Highland Park Baptist Church. She is enjoying her new condo in Northville, Michigan, and only has 29 years left on her mortgage for same. Email Lori at wpemploy@aol.com. Put Lori's name on the subject line. (12/95) Juleen (Swinborne '77) and John Hayes ('77) have returned to Ghana in August 1995, and now they are living in Techiman. The Hayes have begun buying a home in Milford, Ohio, so they can live near John's folks while in the U.S.. While they are in Africa, they rent the home to a couple from their church in Milford. The Hayes have two sons and a daughter. (08/95) Hugh and Debbie ('77) Redmon live and work as missionaries in Valencia, Venezuela. In March of 1994, Hugh resigned as pastor of El Trigal Baptist Church, feeling it was time for the church to find a Venezuelan pastor. The Redmons also work at Camp Carabobo, and Debbie is on the board of directors of a new children's home in Valencia and in the church. Daughter Christy (10) was baptized by her daddy in February of 1994. Their son, Alan, is 7. The Redmons are on furlough from August 1995 to July of 1996, in Panama City, FL. Debbie is working on a graduate degree in counseling. (11/95) Rod Ragsdale ('77) has a new email address. It is rragsdal@bouake.sim.org. Rod works with Muslims in Bouake, including working with seekers at the Centre des Peuples du Livre, which is the name by which the Koran refers to Christians. Rod is also serving as ViceChairman of CBI's Cote d'Ivoire field this year. (5/95) Marianne & David Ruten ('77) are serving in field administration in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The Rutens have four children: Andrew, Wendy, Krystal, and Nathan. (02/95) Denise and Jim Arnold ('78), stationed in Bouake, have three girls at ICA. The Arnolds are planting independent Baptist churches in Bouake. Sarah and Ken Beckley ('78) were married on August 20, 1994. Ken has been an EBM missionary in Tombouctou, Mali. Sarah was serving with ABWE in Kenya. They met at a missions conference in Hagerstown, MD, while both were on furlough. Writing and calling led to marriage for Sarah and Ken. They are now in France where Sarah is learning the language at Les Cedres in Massy, and Ken is brushing up and participating in some church ministries. They will be returning to Mali with EBM. (10/95) Curt and Karen (Slater '78) Cole were home on furlough from June '95 January '96, with their daughter, Carissa (11), and twins Bryan and Brandon(8). The Coles serve with HCJB in Quito, Ecuador. Karen trains teachers for ministry to handicapped children and will teach special education next year. Merri and John Holmes ('78) and their four girls, including baby Katie Joy, born in October 1995, are on furlough in the U.S. Kathy (Mapes '78) Kline lives in Argyle, TX, with her husband, Jerry, and sons, Andrew (6), Aaron (4), and Austin (2). Kathy and Jerry are involved with Bible Studies at their church and at Jerry's work at Texas Instruments. They hope to work overseas someday as tentmakers or with the Navigators. Janice & Andy ('79) Gardner returned to the U.S. (Greenfield, MA) in April of 1995 for the birth of their third son, Nathan Robert. Their other sons are Danny, who begins first grade this year, and Peter who is 3 years old. The Gardners hope to return to Guinea in the spring of 1996. (Summer 1995) Steve and Kayleen (Slater '79) Merry plan on multiple shortterm ministries in Uganda through medical and discipling work. The Merrys landed in Uganda in September, for a fourmonth stint teaching at the medical school at Mbarara University, after which Steve will attend tropical medical training in London. (10/95) Judy Nehlsen ('79) has moved with her employer to Palm Beach, Florida. Judy works as a nanny for two children, and also cooks for the family. In October she planned to attend the Culinary Institute. Nate ('79) and Karol Watkins are working with Liberian refugees in Cote d'Ivoire. (From Grapevine Summer 1995).
1980s Elisabeth and Rick Arnold ('80) are missionaries with Pioneers in Bakel, Senegal. The Arnold family spent 1994/1995 in the US. The Arnolds welcomed their third daughter, born in Cote d'Ivoire, on October 23, 1995. They report on other family members: John ('75) and Betty have been helping out as dorm parents at ICA. Jim ('78) and Denise have been having a fruitful ministry in Bouake and [just finished] their first year on the field. Jim and Shari?('81) are just finishing their first term and will be spending a year in Toccoa, GA. TimDaniels ('80) and wife, Lori, have two children and live in Wheaton, IL. Lori is a parttime nurse. Tim manages and owns several apartments and works parttime at a local hospital. Tim plays soccer in the summer with Daniel Dick ('81). (Fall 1995) Don and Sheri (Slater '80) Fuller are currently living in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Sheri is a Marriage and Family Therapist and Don is preparing for a seminary teaching ministry. He plans to study theology at Oxford University. (10/95) Jene (Carter '81) Conklin, is a missionary in Guinea. David Coad ('81) and his wife have two daughters. David is in graduate school at the University of Michigan. (12/95) Daniel Dick ('81) is the Data Processing Manager at TEAM in Wheaton, IL. Daniel coaches soccer for the WheatonWings traveling soccer league. In the summer he plays soccer with Tim Daniels ('80). Snell Fontus ('81) is a doctor in a hospital in Haiti. (12/95) Art & Ruth (Geysbeck '81) Hegdahl are missionaries to India. (12/95) Greg Jesperson ('81) is a teacher in London, Ontario. His hobby is martial arts. (12/95) Iris Longuevan ('81) and her husband are missionaries in an Asian country, now on home assignment. (1/96) Dan Maxwell ('81) works for Harris Communications, traveling worldwide as an international engineer/radio consultant. (12/95) Jeddy (McGarvey '81) and Mark Brumley have a son at ICA who is in the 4th grade and two girls still at home. Jeddy and Mark are in language study,in Burkina Faso. (11/95) Don and Kathy (Morrison '81) Barron and their children, Brandon (first grade), and LorreeLynn (preschool), live in Sinoville, a suburb of Pretoria, South Africa, serving with The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada. They are developing Service and Leadership Training in order to strengthen local assemblies by offering discipleship and leadership seminars. (Summer 1995) Dan Penney ('81) married Esther Kendall in December of 1994. Esther is an MK from Rwanda. Dan is a computer programmer in Carol Stream, IL, while Esther is completing nursing school. (Fall 1995) Lewann (Siemens '81) and Dave Ball arrived at their new home of Antanarivo, Madagascar (a new field for them) on August 22, 1995. Dave is a helicopter pilot with CBInternational and the couple are "on loan" to "Helimission." They were home on furlough in 1994/95. The Balls' children are Chad (4) and Natalie (2). (8/95) Julie Bledsoe ('82) is working on her M.A. in Religion at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, OK, a suburb of Oklahoma City. She hopes to finish in August of 1996, and eventually be involved in missions. Julie's dad's cancer is again active but he continues to work fulltime. Julie lives with her folks and is also working parttime with the OKC public schools' GED program which she enjoys. She teaches 16/17 year old dropouts as well as adults. She also teaches ESL. (12/95) Tim and Barbie (van den Berg '82) Kusserow are enjoying their new home a downstairs apartment in a fellow church member's home, as they prepare to go to Niger with SIM. SIM has asked them to do translation for the Manga people of eastern Niger. The Kusserows have two toddlers, David and Beth. (4/95) Kathy (Dillinger '82) and Dave Larson live in Glendale Heights, IL. Dave works for World Relief. The Larsons have three children. Curt ('82) & Melodie (Corey '82) Dudley live in Portland, Oregon with their two children, Josiah (5) and Michael (3). (11/95) Donna (Skinner, '82) and Brian Phillips ('82) are moving to Memphis, TN, with their two children. Brian is taking a job there similar to the job he had in Chicago with Continental Grain. Donna is a homemaker and mom. (2/96) Anne and David Osterwind ('82) are living and working in East Africa. Kellie and Chris Cole ('83) live in Littleton, Colorado, where Chris is head soccer coach at Colorado Christian University, and owner of Squeaky Clean, Window Cleaners. The Coles have three children: Jessica (8), Cameron (5), and Cory (2). (10/95) Steve and Bonnie (Pinkston '82) Williams built a new house in St. Louis in 1994. (12/94) In 1992 Joy and Fred Chastagner ('83) were living in Kotzebue, Alaska, and enjoying it. Mrs. Chastagner was also living in Kotzebue near Fred. (Fall 92) Neva (Coad '84) and Jon Dick ('83) have taken a senior pastorship at a small country church in Marion, SD. Son, John, is less than a year old. Sharon and Tim Dresler ('83) live in Everett, WA. They sold their condo and bought a new house in 1995. Their two children are Dan and Jonathan. (12/95) David Jesperson ('83) is a professional trombonist. (12/95) Sonya Longuevan ('83) and her husband are in France. (1/96) Sharon and Robert Pinkston ('83) live in Magnolia, AR, where Robert is the Baptist Student Union director of Arkansas State University. James and Amy (Dillinger '84) Lorentsen live in Elmhurst, Illinois, where Amy teaches math at York High School and coaches soccer. James works for a financial company. The Lorentsens have twin dogs. (12/95) Jon & Joy (Dudley '84) Bigley and son Jerod (5 1/2) moved from Oregon in February 1995, to Michigan with Jon's job transfer. Joy holds down the fort at home as Jerod goes to kindergarten 2 1/2 days a week, and Jon goes to work at WARN Industries, Inc. as a design engineer. The Bigleys hope to go to Africa in 1998 to work at ICA for the 1998/1999 school year and to share Joy's folks last year on the field before they retire. (12/95) Denise & Dwight Friesen ('84) are the proud parents of Sancia Nicole, now 3 years old. In 1992 Dwight was supervising the local Recycling Depot, and coaching junior high soccer. He was the youth pastor at the Evangelical Free Church in Carberry, Manitoba. (10/92) Barbara (Kummerer '84) Robb graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Elementary Education in May of 1990. On August 24, 1991, she married David Edward Robb. In May of 1992 they moved to Philadelphia, PA to pioneer a church for the deaf as home missionaries. From 19921994 Barbara taught first grade. (07/94) Steve ('84) and Lori Albright, are missionaries in Guinea. Ed Chastagner ('84) was not able to graduate with his class as his mom retired after returning to the States. He met Shelley in his junior year of high school, and they were married in 1986. They were living in Kent, WA, in 1992. (Fall 1992) Darren and Reenie (Corey '84) Posey were living in Portland, OR since 1992. They live within walking distance from Melodie (Corey '82) and Curt Dudley ('82). Darren works with a plywood company. (3/93) EricBosenberg ('85) and his wife are missionaries in Guinea. Bruce & Dawn (Clark '85) Cluckie are missionaries to Sierra Leone with World Partners (MCA). They began their first term in February 1992 and were evacuated in May of 1992. They spent the first part of 1993 as interim pastors in Latrobe, PA. In the summer of 1993 they took one session of SIL in North Dakota, and were planning to return to Sierra Leone in the summer of 1993, as part of a church planting team with the Yalunka people. (06/93) Deb and Sam Dick ('85) just finished language study in Quebec, Canada. They left for Mali on February 1, 1996, to work with GMU. Son, Bryan, is 1 year old. Allan ('86) & Robin Ballard are working in Guinea for a year with Liberian refugees. Julie Covington ('86) and Paul Stodgill were married in 1988 and are living in Valley, AL. Julie graduated from Auburn University in 1992 having earned a B.S. in Secondary Social Science. In 1992 she was teaching 12nd graders that are having learning disabilities at a local Christian School. She was to start work on a masters in fall of 1992. (8/92) Sandra Peters ('86) graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Science in Geography in 1991 She has been worked for an environmental engineering firm called DFDickins Associates Ltd. in Vancouver, British Columbia. She enjoys hiking, backpacking, skiing and jogging. (4/93) Esther (Schult '86) Smith graduated from Toccoa Falls College in May of 1991 with a degree in music education. She was married on May 16, 1992 to Steve Smith, and they now live in Mountain City, GA. They were appointed by SIM as missionaries to Senegal, West Africa as church planters. Esther would love to hear from her ICA friends. (5/94) In June of 1995, Laura & Kirk Slater ('86) were appointed by CBInternational to be church planting/leadership training missionaries to Uganda. Kirk is presently the missionary intern at Highland Park Baptist Church, in Southfield, Michigan (home base church to the Slater, Boese, and Gould families). Debbie Jenkins ('87) was to finish her nursing degree at the end of 1992. She was involved with SIMAID, Creation Science, plus her own Christian Students group at the Queensland University of Technology (Australia). (09/92) Stan Walker ('87) and his wife are missionaries in Guinea. Karen Jenkins ('88) was to have completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1992. In 1993 she hoped to be part of Travellers, a Youth for Christ music and drama team, for one year. Lisa Slater ('89) has been a short term missionary in Ecuador and has recently moved to Colorado Springs, CO, to start her missionary career with HCJB Radio on their home staff. (1/96)
1990s Rebecca Jenkins ('90) finished her Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Linguistics, French, Japanese, and she also studied Spanish. (09/92) Beth Byerly ('91) spent six weeks in the summer of 1995 in South Africa working with Child Evangelism Fellowship. She is planning to go back fulltime. She is busy getting further training and seeking financial support. (12/95) Cindy Eadelman ('91) married Shawn Bandy on October 14, 1995. Shawn and Cindy are studying communications at Moody Bible Institute. Dan Pinkston ('91) is attending SWBTS in Ft. Worth, TX. Toby Eadelman ('92) married Susan Bauer, an MK from India, on December 16, 1995. Before his marriage, Toby shared an apartment with Brent Bolls ('92) and Shawn Barnwell ('92). (10/95) Stacy Bolls ('93) married Billy LeQuieu on June 10, 1995. The couple lives in Arkansas. (12/95) Wayne Johnson ('93) is married to the former Eva Crawford and is attending George Fox College in Portland, OR. Trisha Davis ('93) married Bill Cast on August 13, 1994. They now live in Clarksville, TN. They are expecting their first child in February 1996. Bill is in the Army and has been stationed in the Sinai Peninsula since July 1995 and is scheduled to return to the U.S. in January 1996. (10/95) Rachel Bolls ('95) is in her first year at a community college in Seaside, OR. She works parttime in a dental office. Katrina Eadelman ('95) just started at Calvin College, in Grand Rapids, MI. Her current goal is to study accounting and become a CPA.
Staff Dick & Margo Barfell (Houseparents 19891991) are living in Elkhart, IN, where they minister in the BMM MK home. Dick had 5 bypass surgery on August 21, 1995, and is recuperating. (11/95) On December 15, 1994, Myrna Ballard (Houseparents 1990/92) went home to be with the Lord after struggling with cancer for several years. Lyn returned to an assignment in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire as of June 1, 1995. He is responsible for Mission business in Abidjan. The Ballards children are Ginny ('82), Jerry, ('84), and Allan ('86). (Fall 1995) In 1992 Aunt Bea Erickson (staff, 60's) was working part time at a hospital/nursing home. She planned to start with home health care that fall also part time. Bea's husband, Sydney, is also in good health and does yard work for senior citizens. (8/92) Lois Gould (staff 1965, 1972/76) married retired CBI Home Office Treasurer Fay Richardson, in July 1993. The couple are living in Berkley, Michigan, near Lori Gould ('77) and Greg Gould ('79) and his family. Lois is the secretary to the missions pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church. Sheryl O'Bryan (staff '88/90), started as a CBI career missionary at ICA this year. She is adjusting to teaching English this year instead of her usual social studies. (7/95) Elaine Perry (staff, '62'70) is engaged to be married to David Keith, a family friend from her teen ears, in the spring of 1996. Elaine served out the remainder of her missionary career in the Northern Cote d'Ivoire working with school children. She retired in 1990 and is now living in Otsego, in western Michigan. (10/95) Russ & Ruth Ragsdale (staff, '65'92) have transferred to work at the International Christian Academy of Budapest (ICAB), a cooperative effort of several missions working in Central and Eastern Europe. The school was to have opened its doors for the 199495 school year. The Ragsdales returned to the U.S. in early 1995 for surgery for cysts on Uncle Russ' kidneys. Jim is teaching at Umpqua Valley Christian School, and Dee is substitute teaching.
Births Sancia Nicole Friesen, born May 17, 1992, to Denise and Dwight Friesen ('84). Austin David Kline born September 30, 1992, to Kathy (Mapes '79) and Jerry Kline. Ian James Posey born June 24, 1993 to Darren and Reenie (Corey '84) Posey. This is their first child. Tanner William Grudda born October 15, 1993, to Dianne and Bill Grudda ('75). Tanner joins three big brother, Brandon, Lucas, and Austin. Aaron Christopher, born May 27, 1994, to Jana (Bledsoe '81) and Tony Higgins. Elizabeth May ("Beth"), born October 12, 1994 to Tim and Barbie (van den Berg '82) Kusserow. Nathan Robert, born April 25, 1995, to Janice and Andy Gardner ('79). Scott, born May 13, 1995, to Ron & Linda Herdina (staff '90/92) This is their first child. Garrett Slater born August 1995 to Inell and Brent Slater ('76). Garrett joins big brother, Luke (5). Anna Marie, born August 1995, to Carol (Wiens '79) & Steve McLaughlin. Anna joins brother, Christopher Ryan, born 11/27/91. Brian ('84) & Cathy Bliss just welcomed baby boy Cody, after two daughters, Chantelle and Charity. Baby Girl to Rick and Elizabeth Arnold, October 23, 1995. This is their third child: all girls. Katie Joy, born to Merri and John Holmes ('78), joining three big sisters, October 1995.

ICA News Did you know.... ICA has 234 people on campus this year. There are 178 students residing in eight campus dormitories. There are 109 high school students, 68 middle school students, and 57 elementary school students. There are 43 day students living in Bouake. There are 15 kindergarten and preschool staff kids on campus. There are 62 staffmembers at ICA this year. Twenty-two seniors graduated from ICA in 1995. Welcome new alumni! Miss Marlene Decker, 4th grade teacher, was in Oregon throughout the 19941995 school year. On October 9, 1995, she began her seventh series of chemo treatments. Her last blood test indicated that the cancer growth is being reduced, and it is not doing as much harm to her body. Unfortunately, the cancer is still not gone. As of 1/26/96 from Miss Jan: Marlene is taking a rest from chemotherapy but started a series of 25 radiation treatments on January 18, 1996. Marlene would appreciate your prayers and letters. Phone (503) 5819244; Fax (503) 3643624 (1/96) Bruce Friesen has been directing the building of a "gymnatorium" on campus in the "park" area between Baraka, Bethany dorms and the dining hall. A commercial builder is now needed to supervise the roofing and completion of the project. The school was also in the process of revamping the lower field. This area will soon include a level grass soccer field and a multipurpose track, providing enough space for P.E. classes, intramural games, competitive sports and special events. Outreach: ICA's Building Outreach group conducted a building project in January 1996 in Bouna where Mike Cousineau ('73) is stationed. The team drove from Ferke to Bouake without a clutch on the bus ("Some things never change," says Miss Jan). African Culture Week was held January 22-26, 1996. The courtyard was filled with artisans and the classes had many special speakers with an emphasis on Africa. The
