African E-News
Mark Richards ('79) recommends Drumbeat and Mediabeat, free newsletters available at www.comminit.com "They both have extremely  interesting articles from news media coverage of communication, development  and change trends, programmes and policies with respect to less well  developed countries. They cover most of Africa. Articles are compiled by The Communication Initiative, run by Warren Feek."  Contact Mark at mark@bisconti.com.

Another Website from Mark: "The Africa Summit Plan of Action calls for a
greater emphasis on Africa in U.S. foreign policy and specific action in a

number of areas including: development and humanitarian aid; intervention in support of peace, security and human rights; and preferential trade treatment for Africa. An analysis of American public opinion on the proposals is available at pipa.org."

Total on hand now:  $ 45.82

In an attempt to keep expenses down, we e-mailed the October newsletter to everyone we had e-mail addresses for.  Thank you for your patience. If for some reason you did not get a newsletter, please contact Brenda Kopp at 668 Stuart Dr., Carol Stream, IL 60188 or by e-mail bbkoppcsil@msn.com. Some of you who are overseas have contacted me about the expense in receiving such documents. Thank you for that information and we will try to accommodate your needs in the future.  Brenda Kopp

[Note that even though we e-mailed the fall 1999 newsletter to about half of our mailing list (at that time 700 names on the full list), it still cost $384.18 to copy and mail the snail mail newsletters, because we are no longer able to send letters as a non-profit organization.  We were mailing them through the CBI office when they were in Wheaton, IL (near our circulation manager, Brenda Kopp), but they moved to Littleton, CO last summer. We are looking into other arrangements, but as usual we could badly use your financial support! - Editor]

Reunion 2000
June 30 - July 4th. Toccoa Falls College, Georgia.

(This reunion has been cancelled due to lack of response.)

How do You Read the Echoes?
As an editor, sometimes I wonder how people read this newsletter. Some maybe find the news of own classmates and stop there, maybe glancing through the classes near their own for news of other friends or friends of siblings. That's what I tend to do with my college newsletters, and that's fine of course.  But sometimes I like to at least skim those newsletters cover-to-cover, to see if anybody WAY older or younger than me has any interests or contacts similar to mine, or maybe they live in my hometown.

And I think ICA Alumni should read this newsletter that way!  You might find another alumnus who lives near you, for example, invite them over for supper, and find just lots of things you have in common, just because you went to the same school, thousands of miles away and many even many years separated from each other.  And you might even be able to help each other in some way.

I've had personal expeience with this several times.  A couple years ago, an ICA grad whom I had never met, Gene Richards ('85), was reading the Echoes and saw that I lived in Northville, Michigan, the town neighboring his home in Westland.  He e-mailed and I wrote back and eventually found out he was a lawyer.  "I work for Christian lawyers, you should meet them sometime," I said.  After I wrote that e-mail I felt kinda foolish - why would he want to meet them?  And then I actually got an e-mail from his WIFE, saying Gene was out of town, but they had just been praying about a new job for him and he was VERY anxious to meet my lawyer bosses.  A luncheon appointment was made, and now Gene has been at our firm for over a year-in fact he is my boss' #1 assistant and I buzz him on the intercom often, saying, "Eh Patron, do you have that file we're missing?"  I think it is really neat to have a fellow ICA-er working in my office, especially when Gene comes up to my desk and says something like, "Dontcha just feel like a Harmataan wind should be blowing up any day now?" or recalls some African French expression that has me falling off my chair laughing. For his part, Gene says that this connection was "one of the clearest examples of God's leading in my life that I've ever experienced."

I've made another new friend from ICA through the ICA web site.  Lauren (Bissett '95) Fisher is the very gifted creator of the ICA Alumni Web-Site (www.ica.ed.ci) and it has been a HOOT sharing e-mail and chatting times--getting to know her--all over the Internet.  Although we graduated from ICA 18 years apart (does that mean she was born about when I graduated? NO! I don't want to think about that!), we knew a lot of the same people from Abidjan, and ICA, and have had a lot of fun sharing ideas and news for the newsletter and web-site.

So - all this to say - Read us from cover to cover!  You might meet a new friend--from the ICA old stomping ground.

1970s

Linn (Slater '70) and Glenn Boese are in Beverly Hills, MI, this year for home assignment. Linn writes of interests in: "reading, speed walking, coffee with friends, ICAPA (the ICA Parents' Association!), giving haircuts, writing, sewing, listening to jazz, keeping in touch and in tune with my kids and husband." E-mail the Boeses at GLBoese@compuserve.com. (fall 99)

"Hi all! This is Donna (Halbert '70) Harvey, and I'd love to see more of you from my years at ICA write in and give some current news, too. I left ICA in 1968, graduated high school in Long Beach, CA in 1970, attended Biola College four years. I currently reside in University Place, WA (Tacoma area). My two oldest sons also live here. My youngest son and daughter currently live with their father in Illinois. They are the joy of my life. Let me introduce them: James, 25 years old (11/74); studying for a degree in business and computers. Josh, 24 (4/76); engaged to a terrific young woman, Debra, and planning to marry June 2000; is an apprentice to become an electrician. Jake, 19 (5/82) moved to Illinois this Jan. to help his father start up and run a gourmet coffee shop on a nearby military base. Jennifer, 17 years old (12/80); a junior in high school, is currently living with her father in Illinois; very people oriented. My current involvements include an informal women's ministry; I am also evaluating opportunities for very part-time work (due to health) from home; and I am a distributor for a cutting edge nutritional supplement company. My interests are people, nature, reading, writing, computer, cross-stitch and rug making and crafts, and new adventures. Oh...of course, I still love cats! E-mail Donna at nomad2001@earthlink.com (02/00).

Joe and Mimi (Parelius '71) Romanowski write that they have been "consumed with trying to get our house rebuilt so that we can move back in."  A fire destroyed the original house last spring.  The family moved into the new house on February 12.  Mimi's mom, "Aunt" Clara Rose Parelius, moved from Florida to live with the Romanowskis in November. E-mail: joemimi@gateway.net

Nancy and Dan ('72) Grudda are working at ICA this year. Dan is filling in as business manager and maintenance supervisor, and Nancy is "The Bulletin Lady," putting out different bulletins to keep the staff and students informed of daily events.  [You can see the Thursday Bulletins, an interesting "slice of life" from ICA, at the web site -click on the "Office, Bulletin Board, and Thursday memo" links.] (02/00)

Amy and MichaelLyons ('74) praise the Lord for His faithfulness to them in Spain where they have served with BMM since 1989. Plans are being made now for furlough in 2000-2001, and the Lyons have been contacting U.S. churches to set up an itinerary. In December Mike and a national pastor baptized four new converts.  The majority of the Lyons' church members are from South America.  Mike started a song leading course for the men of the church this winter and also teaches piano one night a week, hoping to eventually train church pianists. Amy and Mike also continue  to preach and teach on Sundays and do other ministries. The Lyons met while Mike was teaching in Amy's high school after college days, and they married in 1984.  Although Amy is from Minnesota, they make their home in South Bend, IN, on furloughs.  The couple has three sons, Michael (12) and Westin (9)--who attend Evangelical Christian Academy, an MK day-school in the Madrid area--and Joel (5) who is presently home-schooled by Amy.  E-mail the Lyons at 106546.102@compuserve.com.  (02/00)

BrentSlater ('76) is studying Comparative Education at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and finding his studies valuable. Family is wife, Inell, and sons, Luke and Garrett.  New e-mail address there: bislater@netscapeonline.co.uk.

Baby news from Pam (Watkins '77) & Barry Shultz: "Dear Friends of Ours, To all you who have excitedly been awaiting our news, it is bittersweet. We thank the Lord for the healthy 7 1/2 lb. Emily Rae, who arrived at 1:32 am on Monday, November 8th, allowed to stay and live with us, and mourn the loss of Jessica Joy, her 2 lb. 2 oz. twin, who is in heaven with the Lord and loved ones gone on before. Please remember us all in prayer." Before the twins' birth in November, Pam kept busy with home schooling Brittany (9) plus her work at the hospital, which she enjoyed right up till the end of August when she left to "rest up". She is very glad to be done working and able to stay home with all of the family. Brittany is now in the 3rd grade and a wonderful helper and big sister, and has been heard to say, "I just didn't know I would love having a little sister so much!"  E-mail the Shultzes at pshultz1@juno.com.

A January e-mail from Hugh and Debbie (Pinkston '77) Redmon reminds us of the flooding and mud slides that left thousands homeless and swept thousands of people out to sea in Venezuela recently.  The relief efforts continue and will continue for months. Local churches and churches all over the country are working with the refugees, and the Redmons ask for our prayers for their missionaries and national pastors as they minister to the needs of those who have lost loved ones and all material possessions. The Redmons' teen-aged daughter, Christy, has participated in the relief ministry and her folks are blessed to see her want to help the homeless.  Hugh and Debbie are members of the Valencia Professional Team, working with professionals in Valencia (near Caracas in Northern Venezuela).  Hugh has been discipling new believers on Sunday mornings and also training members of the El Trigal Baptist Church to lead cell groups. Debbie has been counseling patients at the church, many of whom aren't Christians. Debbie also leads support groups (alcoholism, drugs, and grief groups) for Christians and non-Christians alike. The Redmons' plans to visit Debbie's family in RCI at Christmastime were altered by the flooding which led to many airport problems both in Valencia and Caracas. (Son Alan, 12, is big into karate, and was able to participate in a special training given by Sensei Yamasaki, one of the great karate teachers from Japan, last year.) E-mail the Redmons at redmon@eldish.net (01/00)

MarkRichards ('79) writes, "I'm starting to  think I'm earning a Ph.E.--'procrastinating by holding a fantasy of expertise.' Even so, the nature of the subject has meant that I've met the  political elites of DC. Was surprised last week when the Chairman of the City Council called to "personally thank me" for info provided. Wasn't sure what to say! But that is a kind of psychic reward for the effort, much of  which is going into my "book"--Hope and Delusion in the Nation's  Capital--Struggle for Democracy in the District of Columbia. I'm still as  anti-authoritarian as ever: some things don't change, do they! Check out the report my sister Cherith ('90) and I worked on together as a little "community project" to encourage DC tourist guidebook publishers to cover DC citizen issues more. It's at www.dcwatch.com/richards/000126.htm. If anyone wants to know the history of school governant in DC since 1791, I did a timeline as part of a local discussion on school reform: see www.dcwatch.com/schools/default.htm. Mark was in Brazil (Salvador in Bahia) for New Years, after he went to Rio where he went hand gliding, took a helicopter, hung out on beach and got a nice tan. Mark is planning to go to at least part of the Class of '79's reunion in Orlando.  (02/00)

Kayleen (Slater '79) and Steve Merry were recently appointed with CBInternational for long term service in RCI, starting a residency program at Ferke Hospital and networking to form a Christian Medical Society throughout West Africa.  Kayleen will be homeschooling Matthew and Marielle (now in 1st grade), doing discipleship ministry and helping to organize the residency program.  The Merrys hope to leave for Albertville, France, for language school at the end of August 2000.  (01/00)

Karol and NathanWatkins ('79) are missionaries in San Pedro, RCI, Children are Nathan Jr. (born 9-27-86); Laurelyn (7-17-88); Micah (8-14-90); Lois (10-18-91).  E-mail Nathan and Karol at NateWatkins@Bigfoot.com.   (10/99)

1980s

Daughter Olivia (2) also provides entertainment to the whole family.  Gary is a math instructor at the local tech college near Marinette, WI, and Renee has an in-home business preparing taxes during tax season.  She also volunteers as the church's librarian.  E-mail Renee at reneepjohnson@cybrzn.com.  (12/99)

Tony and Jana (Bledsoe '81) Higgins have a new address, 5928 N. Mueller Ave. Bethany, OK 73008 (405) 728-5551.  The Higgins bought a house in December after a 3-year transition in their lives and report that they are enjoying getting settled in.  Son Aaron is now 5 and in kindergarten, really enjoying it as Mom works in the school office as financial secretary. Jana writes that there have been many unexpected changes for the family in the past few years. "My apologies that I have been unable to stay in touch with many of you. Call or  write us a note! Jana can be e-mailed at her work during regular business hours : jhiggins@putnamcityschools.org"   (02/00)

Danny and Julie (Bledsoe '82) Barron were married on July 10, 1999. "We had a beautiful wedding. We had five little people -our nieces and nephew - from ages five and under as flower girls and ring bearer. We had a junior bridesmaid and groomsman--Kathy (Morrison '81) Barron's older two children- and a candlelighter. We both have three siblings, each of whom participated. Danny composed a duet, which he sang and I attempted-ha. He also sang a solo to me.  ICA-ers Donna (Skinner '82) and Brian Phillips ('82) came from Memphis.... a wonderful delight to me. Danny's a pilot, an aerospace engineer from the Navy Academy in Annapolis, a math and science teacher, and a financial professional with Mutual of New York. He has an interest in missions, as do I.   I am teaching high school dropouts and ESL with the OKC public school system. I also enter businesses, assess the education needed to improve product quality and job performance, create a curriculum using job-related materials, and teach classes in these places....I often have opportunity to share Jesus, the person so many of my high school students and others need.  We currently live in Oklahoma City, OK. Our address may change soon, so perhaps if anyone writes us they can reach us at Jana (Bledsoe '81) Higgins' new address [see paragraph above]. If anyone is coming anywhere near OKC, please call us and come on by. We'd love to see you. Our e-mail: dannybarron@juno.com"  (02/00)

Don and Kathy (Morrison '81) Barron and their children (Brandon, 11, Loree-Lynn, 8, and Sydney, almost 4) have enjoyed having Gerald and Ruth Morrison, Kathy's parents, as neighbors in Pretoria, South Africa. The Barrons have been satisfied that their vision to train African brothers and sisters for cross-cultural missions has become a reality through the establishment of Missions Exposure and Training, and the family now looks to the future as they will be returning to the US, where Don will be teaching at Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota, and serving as chairperson of their missions department. The family plans to move in June 2000. (01/00)

Catherine and Robert E. Lee ('82) live in Florence, SC, where Robert is general counsel for a medical center.  Daughter is Frances Margaret Ann Lee (Margaret), born April 17, 1999. Email: releeatty1@aol.com (01/00)

Correction to information on Dan Buck ('82) & Family.  They are now living in Argos, IN, and use the following e-mail address: DanBuck-WMP@juno.com. And the Bucks have a new son, Walter Buck, born January 3, 2000. "Career accomplishments - sucking his right fist, nursing, crying, sleeping, & soiling diapers: (he is very accomplished at doing all of these) Prognosis: Walter has enjoyed perfect health his entire life, but this condition cannot be expected to last forever. It looks like he is going  to have the usual tear duct blockage our children tend to get their first few days." (from e-mail dated 1/5/00)

Kellie & Chris ('83) Cole are in support discovery mode (about at 75% per Chris' brother Curt on 03/05/00), planning to work with MKs through the Evangelical Free Church Mission.  They will be in a support role for other missionaries in the Turkic World through involvement in MK education in Turkey. The Coles and their three children, Jessica, Cameron, and Cory, live now in Lamar, CO, and can be reached by e-mail at ccole12083@hotmail.com.

Craig Corbin ('83) is married to Liz, and they have three boys, Adam (8), Joel & Kent (twins, 6).  Craig has been teaching in Kenya and Liberia. Craig can be reached by e-mail at 104360.375@compuserve.com. (02/00)

Jessica Loo-Muncill ('83) married Scott Muncill on July 3, 1999.  The couple is now living in Fresno, CA, where Jessica is a visual merchandiser at Sears in Fresno.  Jessica enjoys collecting, buying and selling Star Wars memorabilia and Barbies.  Scott enjoys working on cars and riding motorcycles.  E-mail Jessica at jess1@mailcity.com.  (fall 1999)

Kayleen Carson ('84) and her husband, Mark Todd, are living in Newhall, CA. Children are Kendra (born 7/91), Cami (6/93), and Benjamin (10/96). Kayleen is a "Domestic Engineer, full time teacher (to my own kids)." Mark is a CPA "We enjoy reading, hiking, computer, and church activities....Not any detailed plans for the future at this point. Just the status quo. It's possible we could move sometime in the future, if God opened the job doors, but for the time being, we are enjoying a church we love, and being close to family." mktkcb@netzero.net (11/99)

Joy (Dudley '84) and Jon Bigley traveled with children, Jerod and Jamie, to Mali in early 1999, visiting Jon's brother, Jay and his family there (he is an MAF bush pilot), and then driving to Côte d'Ivoire to spend Christmas with Joy's folks, Chuck & Joan Dudley.  Jon is still working for Holley Performance Products, Inc. in Bowling Green, KY, and Joy "watches over the homestead."  The Bigleys have been working on the addition of 1500 feet to their little ranch house and expected to finish it in early 2000. (12/99)

Phil ('85) and Shannon Maxwell and their son, Noah, will be returning in July of 2000, to Niamey, Niger where Phil will be working as the Projects Coordinator for SIM Niger.  This year the Maxwells have been studying French at the Laval University in Quebec City, Quebec. "We are enjoying being with Bruce and Jan Friesen and family as they are studying French here too in preparation to return to ICA as the Plant Manager." Phil's dad died on January 29, 2000, after nearly two years of illness. "We are thankful that he did not have to suffer long and that we had a very special visit with him in California at Christmas."  E-mail Phil at psmaxell@attcanada.net until April.  (02/00)

Becca (Buck '87) Holcomb married Dan Holcomb ('87) in July of '90 and then Becca went on to receive a BS of Nursing from Calvin College and Dan a BS of Aviation Technology from LeTourneau University. Dan is now an Aviation Mechanic but soon will be a Pilot Ground Instructor for Delta. Becca worked 2 years in oncology nursing, then 4 years in labor and delivery and 2 years running a high risk peri-natal unit. She retired from conventional nursing in '97 after the birth of the Holcombs' second daughter. She is now running a home-based business in nutraceuticals called Mannatech Inc. The couple now has three children, Tiffany Michelle (born 01/94), Sarah Nichole (04/97). and Daniel Ray Jr. (09/99). Becca home schools Tiffany and loves the extra time it gives for biblical instruction and relationship building. "We still have the dream of serving overseas in mission aviation and are waiting on the Lord's call. We enjoy being close to family here in Atlanta ....If you are ever in the Atlanta area please stop by. We have lots of room for guests and can usually put together a mini ICA reunion in a hurry." E-mail Becca.h@juno.com. (10/99)

Bill and Shari (Corey '88) Bradley moved to Caronport, SK, Canada, in the fall of 1999. Alan Shea ('88), whose official title at ICA is "Technology Coordinator," worked in early 1999 with Lassana Fofana, an electronics technician from Liberia, on a project linking ICA's classrooms, offices, computer lab, library, and teacher's work area into a computer network. Alan also worked closely with Lee Abuhl ('76), ICA's maintenance supervisor, on this project. He is also responsible for the 96 telephones on campus and reports that between the computers and the phones, sometimes he feels like he's "wiring the world." On a less technical note, Alan often subs in Beth Eden dorm (high school boys) when the dorm parents are on their day off.  He also taught a high school Sunday School class last year, and enjoys relationships with nationals on staff and off-campus friends.  (from fall 1999 newsletter) E-mail Alan at ashea@ica.ed.ci.  See Alan's full report on the new technology on campus below.

We often get asked for Jan Daugherty's e-mail address. It is jedaugherty1@juno.com.  Miss Jan writes, "I've been so grateful for e-mail. I really would have been frustrated without it.  I've probably gotten a couple dozen from various folks from ICA and Africa over the last year." Miss Jan is living with her parents at 204 51st. Avenue Drive West, Bradenton, FL 34207.  The phone number is 941-758-6909.  Her hip has healed well from her November 1998 surgery.  She visited all of her supporting churches in March-April 1999 and saw a number of former students and missionaries.  While in Washington DC in July, she was guided around town by Ben Byerly ('88) and also had lunch with Mark Richards ('79) and his sister, Cherith ('90).  She also attended Shawn and Becky (Conkle '97) McCabe's wedding in nearby Pennsylvania.  In December she sang in a cantata and went to a "Living Christmas Tree" concert with Sherry Adams Parker and Sheryl O'Brian in Florida.  Most recently she writes, "After directing many plays I am now involved in one at church as an actress!! It will be done for a dinner theater outreach for pre-evangelism. It is a comedy called "Every Little Crook and Nanny." I am one of the nannies! It is fun but time consuming."   (02/00)

Dedria Davis-Tidwell (High School English teacher 1992-93) and her husband, Mark Tidwell, have resigned from SIM in order to work full-time with a new non-profit Christian organization, "Joseph House Ministries", which they helped to start.  "The ministry is dedicated to providing a home free of charge to young adult MKs whose parents are still overseas. New e-mail address for Bea Dreslerabcconnect@hotmail.com. Bea and her late husband, Dick, were CBFMS dorm parents at ICA in the early 1980's. (02/00)

Since leaving Cote d'Ivoire in 1979 Lois (Gould; office staff for three years in mid-70's; dorm staff briefly ca. 1966) Richardson worked for CBInternational in Wheaton for 13 years before moving to Michigan in 1992 to be near family.  She married retired CBI treasurer, Fay Richardson, in July 1993, 28 years after the death of Jim Gould in a car accident.  She worked for her home church in Southfield, Michigan for three years, then took an early retirement.  "Retirement has been VERY busy with many enjoyable activities, which include getting re-acquainted with family I was away from for 40 years and visiting with my adult children (Greg '79 and Lori '77) and others."  (fall 1999)

LaRoyce Hicks (5th grade teacher '93-'99) writes, "I loved my four years of teaching fifth grade at ICA.  Now I am back to taking care of our small orange ranch, raising a huge garden, and selling the produce at Farmers' Markets.  Teaching children at Children's Church is still my joy.  Thank you for including me on the alumni mailing list.  It is a delight to read of several of the young people that were my friends.  You are all welcome to come and stay with me--any time of your choice."  Mrs. Hicks lives in Fillmore, CA.  (Fall 1999)

Kerri (Jenkins, Assistant Dorm Parent '89-'91) and Ron Vos live in Oshawa, Ontario, with son, Daniel (born 07/98). Kerri is a stay-at-home mom. and used to teach elementary school. Pray for the Ragsdales (Administration) - Ruth went in for a biopsy on February 25, 2000.  The tests found carcinoma in cytu, i.e., a cancerous tissue which was entirely localized and would not have caused cancer anywhere else in her body, at least up to its present stage of development. This is a highly curable form of cancer and there are several ways to approach treatment. They include radiation, various kinds of mastectomy, oral chemo therapy with few side effects, or (this would be the most risky) just letting it go and carrying out frequent mammograms and biopsies whenever indicated.  The Ragsdales expect to make a decision on treatment by the end of March.  Ruth is feeling well. E-mail the Ragsdales at RussRagsdale@compuserve.com. (03/00)

New e-mail address for Carl Roth and Sharon Rose-Roth (business manager 78-84)- sross@campus.mor.itesm.mx. The Roths spent the Christmas holidays with their children in the Portland, OR, area.  They are enjoying their time back in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where Sharon teaches ESL at the university and Carl keeps the home fires burning (ask him about the "garlic incident" and the hazards of flirting at the International Office), and also teaches ESL to working staff at the school.  (02/00)

Doug & Joan Wicks (teachers) were in Colorado Springs, CO, in the summer of 1999 for a three-month home assignment. They have now returned for the second half of a four-year assignment with C&MA, helping establish a publishing house for the Evangelical Christian Missionary Union (ECMU) in southwestern Russia (Krasnodar). Daughter, Debra, has started her second year at Asbury College in Wilmore, KY. Son Danny, now a senior, was voted MVP of Black Forest Academy (Germany)'s basketball team last year and also was a sprinter on the boy's track team. E-mail the Wicks at dbwicks@aol.com (02/00)

ICA News
ICA's phone numbers have changed. All numbers now have a 31 preceding the number. Example: Office phone of 225- 63-30-20 is now 225-31-63-30-20.  Fax is 225-31-63-36-44

Email System Change Saves ICA $100,000 Annually!
-Reported by Alan Shea ('88)

ICA switched email systems at the end of last August, and the results are very gratifying. We now have our own email domain, @ica.ed.ci and everyone at ICA now has a network account and email address. The easiest way to "guess" someone's email address is to use their user- id: The first four letters of the last name plus the first three letters of the first name plus @ica.ed.ci. That will get you a 98% of the users. For example, Alan Shea's user-id is: sheaala@ica.ed.ci. Once you get in touch with the person their reply will furnish you with their "real" email address.

Some statistics for your amazement:

Total messages sent between 17 August and 23 November 1999: 51,620, for a
volume of 384,683,871 bytes (over one-half of a CDROM!).  Incoming messages: 20,006 for a total of 117,929,910 bytes.  Outgoing messages: 15,731 for a total of 94,801,182 bytes  Internal messages: 15,433 for a total of 169,353,360 bytes

(The accountants will notice that the numbers do not add up to the total because of differences in selection criteria. Don't let it bother you!)

Besides greater flexibility and lower administrative overhead, we have cut our costs dramatically by using a local Internet Service Provider.  Nine months ago, sending and receiving less than 1/10th of the present volume was costing up to $4,000 per month. At those rates, email messages for the last three months would have cost users over  $35,000! With the new system, each user is charged only $33 per year, with a maximum of $66 per family.

ICA is using Pegasus Mail for Windows and Mercury Mail Transport for Novell NetWare. Our internet service and domain name are managed by Africa Online Côte d'Ivoire, http://www.africaonline.co.ci.

Update from February 2000 -- All fourteen classrooms and all the offices are now networked with fiber-optic cabling, and there are plans (waiting funding!)  to network all the dorms at some future date. The computer lab and library have a total of 21 computers for student use.

Some of the dorms have computers for student use, but very few of these are up-to-date: most are 486 or low-end Pentiums. If you have Pentium or better computers you'd like to donate, contact Alan Shea  <ashea@ica.ed.ci and let us know ASAP! (We have a container leaving port at the end of April that could transport them.)

Internet access is planned for third tri, but its still waiting on some programming "glue" to charge for internet time used.

Praise God for what has been accomplished, and pray for continued strength and more help in the overwhelming tasks!
